Released on the solstice of 2012, Muskoaka’s ‘Thirty Years Past Present’ marries the meticulous multi-layering of rich analogue organ lines (courtesy of a 30-year-old Lowrey Cotillion D575) to complex polyrhythmic electronics in a lovingly constructed and perfectly balanced tribute to both the warmer sounds of the past and the ultra-crisp sounds of the present.
In exploring the organ’s inner textures and natural ambience, Muskoaka builds snug, soulful compositions from the ground up, resulting in an album teeming with playful melody lines and balmy analogue haze. The accompanying electronics both accentuate the organ’s natural warmth and elevate the album to a level beyond mere homage.
At a time when the boundaries between the old and the new have never been more blurred, ‘Thirty Years Past Present’ embraces all that is good about both worlds, distilling the essence of each into one wondrous, kaleidoscopic whole.
